Modern Methods of Construction

At Jackson-Crane Architecture we are committed to harnessing the power of modern methods of construction (MMC) to deliver innovative, sustainable, and efficient building solutions. Our approach integrates advanced techniques such as Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs), Insulated Concrete Formwork (ICF), and timber frame construction, ensuring that we stay at the forefront of architectural excellence and environmental responsibility.

Embracing MMC allows us to offer greater flexibility in design, enabling us to create customised homes that reflect the unique lifestyles and preferences of our clients. Whether it’s a sleek, contemporary design or a warm, traditional aesthetic, our use of advanced construction methods ensures that each home is as unique as its owner.

We believe that the future of home design lies in the integration of modern methods of construction. By embracing these innovative techniques, we are able to deliver homes that are beautiful, sustainable, and built to last.

  • Two Modern Houses using SIPs

Both houses have been built from SIPS (Structural insulated panels) so were designed and manufactured off-site. The kit of parts arrived on the back of an articulated lorry and were then lifted into place to create a water tight shell within two weeks.

Types of Modern Methods of Construction

  • SIPs are a high-performance building system for residential and light commercial construction. The panels consist of an insulating foam core sandwiched between two structural facings, typically oriented strand board (OSB). This method provides exceptional energy efficiency, strength, and speed of construction. By using SIPs, we can significantly reduce on-site labor and material waste, contributing to a more sustainable building process.

  • ICF is a revolutionary building technique that combines the strength and durability of reinforced concrete with the exceptional insulation properties of expanded polystyrene (EPS). This method involves stacking hollow blocks or panels, which are then filled with concrete to create a robust and highly insulated structure. ICF construction offers superior thermal performance, sound insulation, and resistance to natural disasters, making it an ideal choice for both residential and commercial projects.

  • Timber frame construction is a time-honored method that we have modernised to meet contemporary building standards. Utilising precision-engineered wood components, timber frame structures are not only aesthetically pleasing but also environmentally friendly and quick to erect. The natural thermal properties of wood, combined with our advanced design techniques, ensure that our timber frame buildings are energy-efficient, sustainable, and built to last.

  • Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) construction is an innovative and sustainable building method that utilises large, prefabricated wooden panels made from layers of solid wood boards stacked crosswise and bonded together. This cross-lamination process enhances the structural rigidity and stability of the panels, making CLT an ideal material for a wide range of applications, from residential homes to large commercial buildings.

CLT panels offer exceptional strength, comparable to traditional building materials like concrete and steel, while being significantly lighter. This weight advantage simplifies transportation and reduces the need for heavy-duty foundations. Moreover, CLT's natural thermal insulation properties contribute to energy-efficient buildings, and its carbon sequestration capabilities help reduce the overall environmental footprint.

Incorporating CLT into construction projects allows for faster assembly times due to the prefabrication process, which also minimises on-site waste and noise. Its versatility and aesthetic appeal provide greater design flexibility, making CLT a preferred choice for modern, eco-friendly construction.
